Under the direction of the Supervisor, the HIM Specialist will maintain a comprehensive and secure medical record for continuous patient care, research, statistical, and billing purposes.
This role is responsible for safeguarding patient privacy, ensuring HIPAA compliance, and following Joint Commission, CMS, hospital bylaws, policies, and other regulatory requirements.
The position works closely with other HIM team members to support continuity of care, operational effectiveness, quality improvement, patient safety, and health information management services. It also involves direct customer service and requires a professional, positive approach in all interactions.
Minimum requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong customer service and communication skills (oral, non-verbal, and written)
- Ability to multitask and remain detail oriented
- Ability to comprehend and apply federal and state regulations
- Problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
- Data entry skills, including proficiency with email, fax machines, scanners, copiers, Microsoft Outlook, Word, and PDF applications
Preferred qualifications
- Knowledge of Cerner/Oracle EMR
- Completion of a college-level medical terminology course or equivalent
- Ability to speak, read, and write in a second language
- RHIT/RHIA or AHIMA micro-credentials
