Health Information Coordinator I

Coordinates the systematic storage, maintenance, retrieval, retention, and release of health information for a medical and clinical records system at Ely State Prison.

Primary duties include maintaining complete and accurate medical records, creating and filing records, flagging deficiencies, thinning and purging records, preparing reports and statistics, assisting with quality improvement activities, and supporting administrative medical office functions such as scheduling and transcribing information.

This role also serves as a liaison with regulatory and accrediting agencies, helps ensure HIPAA compliance, and provides training and technical assistance to staff on records management practices.

Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One semester-length course in basic medical terminology
  • Two years of experience in a medical records department or similar setting involving:
    • Initiating and maintaining medical or clinical records
    • Releasing information according to laws and regulations
    • Maintaining confidentiality
    • Working with staff, patients, and the public
  • Or one year of experience as a Health Information Coordinator Trainee in Nevada State service
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Additional requirements

  • Transcript or certificate showing successful completion of a basic medical terminology course must be attached
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting
  • A valid driver's license is required at appointment and for continued employment
