HIM Specialist

MiraVista Behavioral Health Center

Perform daily operations of the Health Information Management (HIM) department and related projects, including Master Patient Index (MPI) maintenance, disclosure of patient information, chart auditing, quality assurance, and other assigned HIM functions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identify, research, and correct data integrity issues within the Master Patient Index (MPI)
  • Communicate MPI data integrity issues to impacted areas
  • Scan and index documents accurately and in a timely manner
  • Analyze medical record entries for completeness, timeliness, and accuracy according to department procedures
  • Ensure key medical record analysis functions are completed for each record and that deficiencies are identified and noted in the EMR
  • Audit accuracy of electronic entry and help resolve discrepancies
  • Track and maintain records of all interactions using internal systems
  • Ensure medical documentation is entered into the Electronic Medical Record
  • Conduct ongoing quality assurance activities with the CDI Specialist and Director of HIM
  • Notify clinicians when incomplete or delinquent medical records are identified
  • Serve as a liaison to physicians and other medical support staff to support complete, timely, and accurate health information
  • Process all ROI requests in accordance with federal and state requirements and facility policy
  • Safeguard medical records and maintain HIPAA compliance
  • Attend ongoing training sessions and team meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications

High school diploma required.

Preferred qualifications and experience:

  • Two years of post-high school education or 5 years of experience in a health care setting preferred
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Office tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Extensive use of computers and office equipment, including fax machines, copy machines, and scanners
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission requirements and federal/state guidelines related to health record completeness and patient privacy
  • Knowledge of health information systems and data management
  • Knowledge of health record content and sequence
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all phases of work
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects and large amounts of data
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
