Medical Records Technician (Coder - Outpatient)

The Department of Veterans Affairs is hiring a Medical Records Technician (Coder - Outpatient) for the Northern Arizona VA Health Care system. This position is based in the Health Information Management section and is designated as a remote role, with telework eligibility noted.

Medical Records Technicians (Coder) classify medical data from patient health records in hospital and physician-based settings. The role involves abstracting patient records, assigning diagnosis and procedure codes, and supporting accurate reimbursement and reporting.

Key duties include:

  • Assigning codes from current coding systems based on assigned work
  • Establishing primary and secondary diagnosis and procedure codes for outpatient encounters
  • Supporting allowable reimbursement requirements
  • Working collaboratively within a team environment
  • Coding diagnoses from paper forms for VA registries
  • Re-reviewing outpatient coding identified by the VERA committee
Requirements & Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency
  • One year of creditable experience in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and health record structure/format, or an approved education/training equivalent
  • An associate degree in health information technology/management or a related field with required coursework, or completion of an AHIMA-approved coding program or equivalent intensive coding training
  • Current certification at the apprentice/associate, mastery, or clinical documentation improvement level from AHIMA, AAPC, or ACDIS
  • One year of experience equivalent to the GS-07 level for GS-08 consideration

Additional expectations include the ability to analyze health records, perform full-scope outpatient coding, interpret guidelines, and use judgment when documentation or guidance is incomplete.
