This position is fully remote.
The Inpatient Hospital Coder applies skills and knowledge of currently mandated coding and classification systems and official resources to select the appropriate diagnosis and procedural (PCS) codes and other codes representing healthcare services. The role is responsible for selecting and sequencing codes so the organization receives the optimal reimbursement to which the facility is legally entitled, while maintaining ethical and compliant coding practices.
Essential duties
- Use a computerized encoding system to facilitate accurate coding.
- Sequence diagnoses and procedures using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, UHDDS, Medicare, Medicaid, and other fiscal intermediary guidelines.
- Support accurate reporting of healthcare data elements for reimbursement, value-based purchasing, quality, patient safety, and research purposes.
- Query providers when health record information is conflicting, incomplete, or ambiguous.
- Maintain coding knowledge through continuing education.
- Apply official coding rules and internal policies to assign accurate codes on hospital claims.
- Attend coding meetings, roundtable sessions, daily huddles, and LEAN problem-solving activities.
- Maintain focus and professionalism during remote work and virtual meetings.
- Assist with organizing the shared drive for the medical coding department.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Prior experience in hospital medical coding preferred.
- Prior experience with 3M 360 and EPIC preferred.
- Must score 80% or above on assessment.
- New coders will be considered with a higher assessment score.
- Excellent computer skills and ability to navigate multiple systems simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote position.
- Ability to maintain a remote work area that protects confidential health information.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding classification systems.
- Detail-oriented and efficient while maintaining productivity.
- Coding certification/credential through AHIMA or AAPC in good standing required.
