Bonavista Family Medicine is seeking an experienced and dependable Medical Biller/Coder to support the billing and coding needs of a busy family practice.
This hybrid position is part of a small, patient-focused primary care team where teamwork, communication, accountability, and accuracy are highly valued. The role involves managing day-to-day billing and coding work, helping maintain organized accounts receivable, and supporting smooth practice operations.
Requirements & Qualifications
Responsibilities
- Accurately code office visits, procedures, and diagnoses using current ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS guidelines
- Prepare and submit claims to commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payers
- Review claims for accuracy and appropriate documentation prior to submission
- Review EOBs/ERAs and identify payment discrepancies
- Work rejected and denied claims and submit corrected claims or appeals as needed
- Follow up on outstanding insurance accounts receivable
- Verify insurance coverage and benefits when necessary
- Identify coding, documentation, or billing issues that may delay or reduce reimbursement
- Communicate with providers and staff regarding documentation and coding questions
- Assist with patient billing questions and account balances
- Maintain accurate and confidential patient and billing records
- Stay current with payer requirements and coding changes
- Help improve billing processes and keep accounts receivable organized and up to date
Qualifications
- Previous medical billing and/or coding experience required
- Experience in family medicine, primary care, or an outpatient physician practice preferred
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, insurance billing, and claims processing
- Experience working denials, rejected claims, and accounts receivable
- Familiarity with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance requirements
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify billing or coding errors
- Comfortable communicating with insurance companies, patients, providers, and coworkers
- Able to work independently, prioritize tasks, and follow issues through to resolution
- Dependable, professional, and committed to protecting patient confidentiality
- CPC, CCS, CCA, or other coding/billing certification, or equivalent experience
