Medical Coder - CVIR/IR

Optum

Optum is seeking a Medical Coder specializing in CVIR/IR coding to support outpatient facility coding and charge capture initiatives. This full-time role focuses on accurate CPT and ICD-10 assignment for interventional radiology and related facility encounters, with the flexibility to telecommute from anywhere in the U.S.

Primary responsibilities

  • Assign appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes for interventional radiology services, including angiography, angioplasty, stent, atherectomy, embolization, thrombectomy, thrombolysis, central venous access devices, epidural injections, myelography, lumbar puncture, biopsy, drainage, and aspiration.
  • Code acute care facility, ancillary, ED, multispecialty same-day surgery, and observation encounters.
  • Review clinical notes to ensure complete charge capture and coding compliance.
  • Work with radiology clinical and revenue cycle teams to resolve coding denials, rejections, and coding edits.
  • Collaborate with providers and internal teams to address coding queries and documentation issues.
  • Abstract additional data elements during chart review as needed.
  • Maintain ethical coding standards in accordance with AAPC and/or AHIMA.
  • Stay current on coding regulations, payer guidelines, and industry updates.
  • Meet required coding quality and productivity standards.
  • Participate in coding meetings and educational events.
  • Track charts coded, held, and missing.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Requirements & Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Active professional coder certification through AHIMA and/or AAPC (CCA, CCS, RHIA, RHIT, CPC-H/COC, CIC, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-A), maintained annually.
  • 2+ years of outpatient facility coding experience.
  • 2+ years of experience working with ICD-10.
  • Ability to use a PC in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Excel and EMR systems.

Preferred qualifications

  • 2+ years of interventional radiology coding experience.
  • Experience with encoder systems such as eCAC, 3M, and EPIC.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
