Outpatient Medical Coder

Distinctive Home Care Inc

Distinctive Home & Health Care is seeking a full-time Outpatient Medical Coder to support Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune. This role focuses on accurate outpatient coding, documentation review, and revenue cycle support in a healthcare setting serving military installations across the United States.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Review outpatient medical records and assign ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes based on documented diagnoses and procedures.
  • Ensure coding accuracy and compliance with CMS guidelines and other applicable coding regulations.
  • Collaborate with providers to clarify documentation when needed for precise code assignment.
  • Use medical coding software and EHR systems to maintain accurate records and streamline workflow.
  • Perform medical record abstraction for billing and reporting purposes.
  • Stay current on ICD coding updates, DRG classifications, and outpatient coding standards.
  • Support revenue cycle management by ensuring proper coding for outpatient services.
  • Assist in training or mentoring new staff on coding procedures and compliance standards.
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of outpatient medical coding experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Familiarity with both ICD-9 legacy systems and ICD-10 coding systems.
  • One of the following credentials is required:
    • Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT)
    • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
    • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
    • Certified Coder Specialist - Physician
  • Strong knowledge of CPT coding, HCPCS Level I and II, and DRG classifications.
  • Proficiency in medical billing, collections, and revenue cycle management workflows.
  • Experience using electronic health records (EHR) systems and medical coding software.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and clinical documentation practices.
  • Familiarity with medical record abstraction and CMS coding guidelines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to interpret complex clinical information accurately.
  • Strong communication skills for collaboration with providers, billing teams, and auditors.
