The Certified Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing medical record information, extracting data, and assigning appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes for billing, internal and external reporting, research, and regulatory compliance. This role applies coding standards in accordance with official coding guidelines and uses an electronic encoder application to support accurate coding practices.

This is a full-time remote position with onsite onboarding and equipment pickup required for two days only. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

Key responsibilities include coding and abstracting records, resolving coding edits, supporting audits, collaborating with revenue integrity and compliance teams, communicating with providers regarding documentation issues, and maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and certification

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate degree preferred
  • Certification preferred: RHIT, CCS, RHIA, CPC, CPC-H, CPC-A, or CCA

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of coding experience

Skills and knowledge

  • Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT coding, medical terminology, and insurance billing
  • Understanding of DRGs for inpatient facility coding preferred
  • Experience or training in medical terminology and anatomy/physiology
  • EPIC EHR experience preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Strong customer service skills

Work duties

  • Ability to assign ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, modifiers, and HCPCS codes accurately
  • Ability to research Coding Clinics and resolve CCI, LCD, NCD, and modifier edits
  • Ability to assist with audits and provider queries
  • Ability to perform general office and clerical duties as needed
