Responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient encounters in accordance with official coding guidelines, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements.
Reviews inpatient medical records in the EMR to determine appropriate diagnoses and procedures for coding based on industry standards, federal regulations, and hospital guidelines.
Accurately assigns code sets to diagnoses and procedures documented in the EMR using the encoder while meeting accuracy and productivity expectations.
Completes queries when needed and collaborates with the Clinical Documentation Improvement Team to support accurate documentation, code and DRG assignment, CMI, severity of illness, and mortality scores.
Records and abstracts codes and required information in the computerized health information system on a timely basis.
Works with the Coding Supervisor to respond to questions from Patient Financial Services, physicians' offices, or patients regarding code assignments made for reimbursement purposes.
Minimum high school diploma; associate or bachelor's degree preferred.
Active AHIMA credential required: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
Successful completion of coding coursework in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and Official Coding Guidelines.
Minimum of 2 years of hospital medical record coding experience required; inpatient coding experience preferred.
Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask, organize, and prioritize work assignments.
Able to work independently with minimal direction and complete assignments timely and accurately.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and SharePoint.
Epic EMR experience preferred.
