Senior Inpatient Facility Medical Coder

Optum

Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, is hiring a Senior Inpatient Medical Coder to provide coding services directly to providers and help ensure documentation and coding standards are met. This is a virtual, remote position with training conducted from home. The role supports high-quality health services by accurately assigning inpatient diagnosis and procedure codes and maintaining coding quality and productivity standards.

Requirements & Qualifications

High school diploma or GED, or higher.

Professional coder certification from AHIMA and/or AAPC, such as RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-H, maintained annually.

3+ years of acute care inpatient medical coding experience in a hospital or facility setting.

2+ years of experience working in a Level 2 or higher trauma center and/or teaching hospital with experience in complex procedures, major trauma ER encounters, cardiac catheterization, interventional radiology, orthopedic cases, neurology cases, and observation coding.

2+ years of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and DRG coding experience.

Ability to pass all pre-employment requirements, including drug screening, background check, and coding assessment.

Preferred qualifications include outpatient facility coding experience, Level 1 trauma center experience, OSHPD reporting experience, and experience with encoder systems such as eCAC, 3M, and EPIC.

Ability to work in a Windows environment, use Microsoft Excel, and work with EMR systems.

Ability to work the weekly schedule of 40 hours, including a Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday schedule, with occasional overtime and one weekend day as needed.
