Emergency Department Coder I

Powers Health

Responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for outpatient emergency department encounters in accordance with official coding guidelines, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements.

Supports appropriate reimbursement and contributes to compliance, quality reporting, and data integrity for Powers Health hospitals.

Remote position with an alternating weekly schedule, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with flexible hours after training.

Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum high school diploma; associate's or bachelor's degree in Health Information Technology or Health Information Management preferred.

Active AHIMA accreditation as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or recent graduates of an accredited HIT/HIM program may be considered.

Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) with two years of coding experience in a hospital medical record setting will be considered.

Previous outpatient coding experience preferred.

Successful completion of courses in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

Thorough knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and official coding guidelines.

Knowledge of Medicare medical necessity regulations, ABN, NCCI, OCE, and proper modifier usage preferred.

Knowledge of injection and infusion coding preferred.

Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask, organize, and prioritize work assignments.

Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to make independent decisions.

Ability to work independently with minimal direction and complete assignments timely and accurately.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and SharePoint.

Epic EMR experience preferred.
