Professional Billing Coder II

The Professional Billing Coder II is responsible for accurately resolving coding edits in assigned Epic work queues and assigning ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding classifications and modifiers based on clinical documentation and/or physician orders.

This role helps ensure data integrity for internal and external reporting, maintains work queues within processing timeframes, responds to billing code inquiries, and follows compliance guidelines.

Essential Functions

  • Evaluate and resolve coding edits in Charge Review, Claim Edit, and Follow-up work queues in Epic.
  • Assign ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding classifications based on clinical documentation and/or physician orders.
  • Resolve assigned coding edits accurately and within required timeframes.
  • Escalate coding and denial trends, and identify provider education opportunities.
  • Navigate Epic EMR, including reports and work queues.
  • Communicate with providers via Epic in-basket messages and email.
  • Follow departmental protocols.
  • Use organizational tools such as Microsoft Office Suite, Kronos, ServiceHub, and Optum Encoder Pro.
  • Meet or exceed productivity standards.
  • Participate in continuing education to maintain knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, and surgical techniques.
Requirements & Qualifications

Skills

  • Medicare coding guidelines, including NCCI and LCD/NCD
  • CPT
  • HCPCS
  • ICD-10
  • Epic / PB Resolute experience
  • Accuracy and attention to detail

  • Communication

Qualifications

  • CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist – Physician)
  • Demonstrated experience in professional fee coding, including Evaluation & Management services and specialty-specific coding
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office tools
  • Demonstrated knowledge of physician billing and healthcare revenue cycle
  • Preferred: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred: Related specialty credential through AAPC or AHIMA
  • Preferred: Two years of professional fee coding experience in the related specialty
  • Preferred: Prior Epic experience
