Under the direction and supervision of the Manager, YM Coding and Billing, this role provides work queue resolution for medical billing charges by reviewing clinical documentation to validate diagnostic (ICD-9/ICD-10) and procedural (CPT/HCPCS) codes for Yale Medicine.

The position helps ensure compliance with coding guidelines, third-party reimbursement policies, regulations, and accreditation standards. It also supports accurate, timely billing activity and optimal reimbursement.

This opportunity is currently remote (work from home) within Connecticut.

Principal responsibilities include:

  • Receiving, classifying, coding, posting, and reconciling account information
  • Reviewing account records for accuracy and completeness
  • Preparing and distributing billing statements
  • Obtaining and providing account, procedure, and regulation information
  • Correcting errors and reconciling cash transactions
  • Referring delinquent accounts to a supervisor or collection agencies
  • Researching individual accounts and summarizing findings when needed
  • Completing forms and handling clerical functions related to account activity
Requirements & Qualifications

Required

  • Four years of related work experience, including two years in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school education; or two years of related work experience and an associate degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of ICD and CPT coding, medical terminology, and EMR systems
  • Ability to use databases and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel
  • Ability to adapt to new software
  • Strong initiative, independent judgment, and critical thinking
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to manage a high volume of accounts and work under pressure
  • Ability to multitask in a high-volume environment and adapt to changing priorities and workflows
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate professionally and tactfully
  • Excellent attendance, punctuality, and time management

Preferred

  • Current CPC certification, or the ability to obtain it within six months of employment
  • In-depth knowledge of Epic
