Outpatient Coder

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 2 years of outpatient coding experience in one or more of the following settings:
  • Physician's office
  • Ambulatory surgery center
  • Emergency department
  • Multidisciplinary medical practice/group coding
• Related formal education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis

Certification Requirements

One or a combination of the following:

• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
• Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
• Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
• Certified Coding Specialist-Physician Based (CCS-P)
• Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
• Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)

Knowledge and Skills

• Outpatient code sets including CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM/PCS
• Medicare hospital and physician outpatient coding and reimbursement regulations
• Healthcare technology and EHR practices
• Coding guidelines, departmental policies, and procedures
• Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, and minor surgical procedures
• Revenue cycle workflows, including charges, charge master, code edits, auditing, denials management, and documentation improvement
• 3M 360 or similar integrated encoder/computer-assisted coding systems
• Webex, queries, denial review, and technical reporting
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and productivity standards
• Ability to work with confidential patient and organizational information
