The HIM Certified Coder is responsible for accurate and timely coding of hospital inpatient, hospital outpatient, and/or professional fee encounters using ICD-10, ICD-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes. This role uses coding software and electronic medical record systems to support compliant billing, resolve billing edits, and ensure coding accuracy.
The position also supports revenue optimization while maintaining compliance with regulatory guidelines. The coder serves as a resource for CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and other coding systems, assists with charge capture, participates in internal and external audits, and helps identify documentation and coding improvement opportunities.
Must hold one or more of the following certifications: RHIT, RHIA, CPC, COC, CIC, CCS-P, or CCS.
Key responsibilities include:
- Accurate coding of records using ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and modifiers
- Understanding and applying coding guidelines and regulatory requirements
- Providing coding assistance to internal departments
- Supporting audit activities and internal controls
- Maintaining coding certification, knowledge, and skills
- Performing provider and peer coding audits as requested
