Medical Coder, Certified

Greene County General Hospital

The Certified Medical Coder is responsible for coding medical records using ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 conventions for hospital inpatient and outpatient accounts. The role ensures accurate diagnosis and procedure coding, supports proper reimbursement, maintains HIPAA compliance, and assists with charge review, billing edits, denials, rebills, and prior authorization coding support.

Additional responsibilities include educating physicians and hospital departments on coding practices, retrieving missing chart information, assisting with training new coders, and supporting quality, safety, and patient satisfaction initiatives.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Associate degree required, or High School Diploma/GED with 2-4 years of medical coding experience in an HIM department setting
  • 2-4 years of coding experience in a hospital setting preferred

Certification

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required
  • Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) preferred

Skills

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately with confidential information
  • Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Above-average typing and alphanumeric data entry skills
  • Strong understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, and surgical techniques

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent sitting and long periods of data entry
  • Occasional bending, stooping, and reaching
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs
