Summary

The medical coder is responsible for evaluating medical records documentation and coding diagnoses and procedures for claim data entry.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Comply with all legal requirements regarding coding procedures and practice
  • Apply ICD-10 and CPT/HCPCS coding accurately
  • Ensure correct coding compliance for procedures performed across various specialties
  • Work in a high-volume medical coding environment while maintaining exceptional standards of excellence
  • Relay necessary information to appropriate clinic staff and providers
  • Participate in educational activities and report needed information to the Manager and Providers
  • Maintain expert knowledge of coding workflow and optimize use of available technology
  • Help review insurance denials related to coding issues
  • Conduct audits and coding reviews to ensure documentation is accurate and precise
  • Collaborate with the Clinic Manager, Providers, and Business Office Manager to ensure claims are satisfied timely
  • Protect PHI and follow HIPAA guidelines
  • Maintain department quality and production standards
  • Maintain minimum attendance requirements and work full-time regular hours as established
Requirements & Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school
  • Or 6 months to 1 year of related experience and/or training
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Equivalent to an associate's degree in medical information technology with coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, ICD-9-CM coding, and prospective payment

Skills and Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate courteously with other team members
