Medical Coder

As a coder, you will ensure accurate communication with insurance companies so services are documented correctly and payments are processed efficiently.

You will translate patient medical records into standardized diagnosis and treatment codes, helping ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and organizational standards. In this role, accuracy, attention to detail, and strong knowledge of coding standards and healthcare regulations are essential.

You will also communicate with providers and staff, manage records efficiently, and help ensure claims are processed correctly and on time.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Apply coding principles consistent with government regulatory standards, payer-specific guidelines, and company policy
  • Code complex office, surgical, and hospital professional charges for assigned providers
  • Review ICD, E&M, CPT, and HCPCS codes to ensure documentation supports all services rendered
  • Query providers when encounters lack clear or missing documentation in the medical record
  • Provide coding and documentation education to physicians and providers as needed
  • Assist clinic and department staff with coding-related questions for assigned providers
Requirements & Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1 year of professional fee coding experience
  • Certified Professional Coder Hospital Apprentice (CPC-HA)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • Certified Professional Coder Apprentice (CPCA)
  • Certified Billing and Coding Certification (CBCS)

Preferred

  • 2 years of surgical professional fee coding experience
  • GECB experience
  • Cerner experience
