Mercer Medicine is seeking a Medical Coder for the Macon, Georgia clinic. The role focuses on reviewing medical record documentation and charge ticket coding to support accurate reimbursement and ensure diagnostic and procedural codes reflect patient encounters. The coder will provide technical guidance to physicians and other staff, research coding questions, and help resolve documentation or code selection issues. This position works under minimal supervision and is expected to be performed in person.
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Coder I: at least 1 year of coding experience, or 6 months of coding experience with a certificate from an accredited facility or institution
- Coder II: AHIMA or AAPC certification and at least 1 year of experience using ICD and CPT in a physician practice, hospital, or clinic
Knowledge and skills
- Understanding of the relationship between CPT and ICD coding
- Ability to communicate effectively with healthcare providers to obtain coding information
- Ability to research diagnoses, procedures, clinical content, and code selection issues
- Knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid/CMS reimbursement rules and claims timeliness
- Ability to maintain patient and employee confidentiality
- Understanding of the billing cycle, revenue impact, commercial insurance contractual adjustments, and balance billing
