Medical Records Technician (Coder)

US Indian Health Service

Selections are being made for available positions located in Pine Ridge, SD and Kyle, SD. The incumbent will perform technical medical records coding assignments designed for accurate claims submission.

Perform accurate inpatient and specialty medical coding procedures.

Review clinical documentation for quality and analyze records for compliant billing.

Identify documentation deficiencies and initiate clarification requests.

Assist providers in identifying missing diagnoses, specificity to clinical linkages, and supporting indicators.

Requirements & Qualifications

Must be a U.S. citizen.

Selectee may be subject to a probationary period.

Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

Must successfully pass E-Verify and a federal background investigation.

Must comply with IHS employee immunization policy if duties require work in an IHS healthcare facility.

Must be able to provide two valid forms of identification prior to appointment; if using a state-issued ID or driver's license, it must be REAL ID-compliant.

Minimum qualifications require at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level performing medical coding-related duties.

Examples of qualifying experience include identifying medical record code issues, correcting sequencing, using medical coding principles for ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, billing, tracking, and operating office automated systems to submit coding transactions.

Must possess or obtain coding certification within one year of initial appointment.

Acceptable certification includes CPC through AAPC and/or AHIMA coding certification.
