The Facility Coding and Audit Lead is responsible for a combination of facility coding, auditing, leadership, project oversight, and quality assurance. This role supports inpatient and outpatient coding using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS, CPT, DRG, and query review workflows based on medical record documentation.
The position focuses on maintaining coding accuracy, consistency, and compliance across the coding team while serving as a technical resource, performing quality audits, mentoring coders, and helping identify trends to reduce coding errors and improve reimbursement outcomes.
Key responsibilities
- Abstract ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS, CPT, DRG, and query reviews based on medical record documentation
- Enter data accurately into client software and Excel reports
- Code and audit inpatient and outpatient accounts across multiple specialties
- Evaluate facility documentation quality for improvement opportunities
- Perform quality assurance reviews on team members
- Communicate with clients and providers regarding coding clarification and missing documentation
- Coordinate with project teams and project management on onboarding, training, schedule changes, and work volume
- Assist with project staffing needs based on client volume
- Track time accurately and comply with PHI, coding, and regulatory requirements
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Current CCS, RHIT, or RHIA credential required
- 3 to 5 years of experience abstracting ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, HCPCS, CPT, DRG, and query reviews
- Experience coding and auditing inpatient and outpatient accounts in multiple specialties, including Trauma I, OB/Gyn, Transplants, NICU, and Pediatrics
- Advanced technical knowledge in coding specialty areas
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology
- Experience researching and applying coding rules and regulations
- Experience entering codes into a database or software tool
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and EMR systems
