Coders in the hospital setting are responsible for technical coding, including assignment of ICD-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes, modifiers, MS-DRG selection, APC assignment, and severity of illness coding.
This role works with medical staff, nursing, ancillary departments, provider offices, and outside organizations to ensure accurate coding, data quality, and appropriate reimbursement.
