Medical Records Technician (Coder)

Summary

This position is located at Fort Bragg, Cumberland, North Carolina. It is a Direct Hire Solicitation for U.S. citizens.

Duties

  • Assign specific codes to medical records to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in patient care.
  • Ensure accurate coding of diseases, injuries, manifestations, operations, and nonsurgical procedures.
  • Perform quantitative analysis and review medical records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct limited utilization review of inpatient records to ensure the diagnosis responsible for length of stay is appropriately identified.
  • Correlate operation codes with diagnosis codes to select the most descriptive code when multiple anatomical locations are involved.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

GS-4

  • One year of general experience in clerical, office, or similar work that demonstrates the ability to learn the duties of the position.
  • Or two years of education above high school level.
  • Or a combination of education and experience.

GS-5

  • One year of specialized experience assigning codes to medical records to reflect resources and procedures used in patient care.
  • Or four years of education above high school level.
  • Or a combination of education and experience.

GS-6

  • One year of specialized experience coding medical records, using office automated systems or software, collecting information for coding, and retrieving medical records or reports from databases.
  • Or a half year of graduate-level education in a related field such as Health Information Management.
  • Or a combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Subject to background investigation and suitability determination.
  • May require work on any shift, including nights, weekends, holidays, or on-call.
  • Mission essential position requiring reporting during severe weather or emergencies.
  • May require travel to various locations.
  • Resume must be two pages or less and support the specialized experience described.
