Outpatient Medical Coder

UMC Health System

The Outpatient Coder is responsible for assigning ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and modifier codes for outpatient visits. This role ensures diagnoses and procedures are coded accurately and in compliance with applicable guidelines and regulations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assign and sequence diagnostic and procedural codes using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant coding of medical services and procedures based on clinical documentation.
  • Review patient records and physician documentation to validate coding accuracy and completeness.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers and staff to clarify documentation discrepancies.
  • Maintain knowledge of current coding guidelines, insurance regulations, and compliance standards.
  • Assist with audits and reviews to support coding accuracy and billing compliance.
  • Resolve coding errors and respond to coding-related inquiries.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA regulations.

Remote work is available at the supervisor’s discretion.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED

Certifications

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or an equivalent credential from an accredited organization
  • Certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire

Skills

  • Proficiency in ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software

Other

  • Ability to work in a mostly sedentary role with frequent walking and standing
