The Outpatient Coder is responsible for assigning ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and modifier codes for outpatient visits. This role ensures diagnoses and procedures are coded accurately and in compliance with applicable guidelines and regulations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assign and sequence diagnostic and procedural codes using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
- Ensure accurate and compliant coding of medical services and procedures based on clinical documentation.
- Review patient records and physician documentation to validate coding accuracy and completeness.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers and staff to clarify documentation discrepancies.
- Maintain knowledge of current coding guidelines, insurance regulations, and compliance standards.
- Assist with audits and reviews to support coding accuracy and billing compliance.
- Resolve coding errors and respond to coding-related inquiries.
- Protect patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA regulations.
Remote work is available at the supervisor’s discretion.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED
Certifications
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or an equivalent credential from an accredited organization
- Certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire
Skills
- Proficiency in ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software
