Senior Professional Coder

Albany Medical Center

The Senior Professional Coder applies advanced professional coding expertise to support professional fee coding, charging, and denials follow-up workflows. This role serves as a coding team lead and subject matter expert, collaborates across departments to ensure timely and accurate coding processes, audits CPT and ICD-10 diagnosis coding for compliance, and provides education and training to providers and coding staff.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Review, analyze, and validate CPT and ICD-10 diagnosis codes and charges for compliance with federal, state, and payer guidelines
  • Support daily coding team operations and help ensure productivity and quality standards are met
  • Perform compliant coding and charge processing for professional fee services
  • Assist with coding rule development, application testing, charge import processes, and system troubleshooting
  • Help with staff scheduling, orientation, training, feedback, and performance evaluation
  • Support department goals using LEAN management principles
  • Participate in recruitment, interviews, policy updates, and documentation maintenance
  • Conduct HCC and risk adjustment chart reviews and identify missed coding opportunities
  • Perform billing integrity reviews and audits to identify documentation improvement opportunities
  • Analyze audit findings, recommend corrective actions, and educate stakeholders
  • Assist with denials management, external audits, and related workflow improvements
Requirements & Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 2 years of experience in professional fee coding
  • CPC, CCA, CCS, COC, RHIT, or RHIA certification
  • Working knowledge of provider professional fee coding and charge processing
  • Proficiency with Windows-based computer systems, Microsoft Word, and Excel
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred

  • Knowledge of multiple coding specialties
  • Experience with HCC and risk adjustment coding
  • Experience in a team lead or supervisory support role
