Coding Coordinator - Inpatient

Under the direction of the Coding Director, this role provides administrative and coding support for a department or division by coordinating work, projects, and staff. The position requires in-depth knowledge of departmental programs, hospital policies and procedures, and includes monitoring coding hold reports.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes to inpatient accounts.
  • Investigate registration, billing problems, and billing edits identified by Patient Accounts and Coding Specialists.
  • Work with specialty departments, Admitting, and Patient Accounts to resolve issues.
  • Monitor abstracting systems to ensure invalid accounts are deleted.
  • Use reports to identify backlogs and support coding workflow.
  • Compile and summarize data for reports and presentations.
  • Maintain records, databases, calendars, and meeting schedules.
  • Coordinate meetings, events, travel, expense reimbursements, invoices, and supply inventory.
  • Assist with special projects and escalate coding concerns to leadership.
  • Maintain proficiency through meetings, education, and ongoing professional development.
Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate degree in Health Information Management, completion of an AHIMA or AAPC coding certification program, or equivalent coding experience required

Licensure / Certification

  • RHIA, RHIT, or CCS from AHIMA, or CIC from AAPC required

Experience

  • Previous office experience
  • Minimum 1 year of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS inpatient coding assignment experience
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications

Skills and Knowledge

  • Medical terminology
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
  • Knowledge of medical records content and management
  • Working knowledge of EMR systems, structured data, and database management
  • Understanding of health information privacy laws and regulations

Preferred

  • Epic experience
  • 3M-360 Computer Assisted Coding experience

Potential additional compensation may include shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, and overtime pay, depending on eligibility and applicable law. Beth Israel Lahey Health also requires influenza vaccination as a condition of employment.
