UPMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is hiring a full-time Coder II to join their team. This Monday through Friday daylight position has no evenings or weekends. Hours are 7:00am to 3:30pm, with some flexibility.
Review pertinent physician, nursing, and ancillary documentation in the medical record. Determine level of acuity, procedures performed, billable supplies, and diagnoses to support medical necessity. Review and sequence codes to maximize reimbursement and address bundling issues. Apply modifiers as needed and assist with LMRP/CCI edits and coding denial resolution.
Use computer applications and coding resources to complete the coding process efficiently. Maintain charge lag and productivity standards, resolve coding edits and denials, identify incomplete documentation, and submit physician queries when clarification is needed. Assign appropriate ICD and CPT codes using standard guidelines and coding references such as CPT Assistant and coding clinics. Participate in coding meetings, maintain continuing education, and track daily productivity.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Graduate of an approved certified coding program preferred
- Curriculum should include Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmacology, Pathophysiology, Medical Terminology, ICD-9-CM, and CPT coding guidelines and procedures
- Proficient computer skills; Microsoft Excel knowledge preferred
- Either 2 years of coding experience with schooling, or 3 years of experience, or CPC certification required
- Eligible for CPC or CPC specialty certification
- Act 34 clearance with renewal required
