The Inpatient Coder II analyzes medical records to assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes, ensuring accurate code assignment and optimal reimbursement in compliance with state and federal guidelines. The role works closely with the Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) team to support accurate DRG assignment and collaborates with management to resolve issues and meet deadlines.
This position is remote work eligible for candidates residing in FL, GA, ID, KS, KY, MS, NC, OK, SC, SD, TN, and VA.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or GED required
- Program graduate in Health Information Management Services (HIMS) or related field preferred
Experience
- 3-4 years of active inpatient coding (acute care) required
Skills and Knowledge
- Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, clinical science, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, and laboratory medicine
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to listen, respond appropriately, and present information in an organized and professional manner
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, encoder tools such as 3M 360 preferred, and electronic medical records such as EPIC preferred
Licenses and Certifications
One of the following required:
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) - AHIMA
- Certified Coding Associate (CCA) - AHIMA
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) - AHIMA
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) - AHIMA
- Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) - AAPC
