Professional Coder I - Revenue Cycle

UTHealth Houston

UTHealth Houston is hiring a Professional Coder I to join its Revenue Cycle team, supporting charge coding and capture.

This role focuses on coding Emergency Medicine encounters, resolving coding edits in Epic and Optum Claims Manager, and supporting professional charge entry and reconciliation. The position is remote, but requires two weeks of onsite training in Houston and occasional required onsite meetings. Candidates must permanently reside and work in Texas.

Requirements & Qualifications

Core responsibilities

  • Review medical documentation to assign and sequence CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and modifier codes for professional encounters
  • Resolve Epic Coding and Optum Claims Manager edits
  • Review coding work queues and correct coding-related issues in a timely manner
  • Generate basic physician queries when needed
  • Perform charge entry for professional services, including non-invasive tests, anesthesia, and hospital or office-based visits
  • Abstract information for ancillary procedures and less complex outpatient services
  • Perform charge reconciliation using logs, visit schedules, and reports
  • Meet coding quality and productivity standards
  • Maintain continuing education relevant to coding credentials
  • Stay current on federal, state, coding, and departmental guidelines

Required qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of HIM coding experience, or equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding conventions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database/data abstraction skills
  • Understanding of federal/government regulations, coding guidance, and revenue cycle policies
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision

Required credentials

  • RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or RCC certification
