This role supports the revenue cycle by ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely claim submissions to insurance providers. The Billing Specialist helps maintain financial stability, supports clinicians by handling billing and coding tasks, and contributes to efficient workflows that improve client access to care.

Requirements & Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate codes to diagnoses, treatments, and procedures using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS.
  • Ensure codes are applied correctly for billing and reimbursement.
  • Review patient charts and supporting documentation for coding accuracy.
  • Prepare and submit clean claims to insurance providers.
  • Follow up on unpaid or denied claims and resubmit corrected claims as needed.
  • Work with insurance companies to resolve claim disputes and rejections.
  • Assist with accounts receivable reconciliation and patient payment processing.
  • Manage client accounts, including invoicing, payment plans, and balance inquiries.
  • Prepare monthly reports on billing activity and revenue collection.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance and follow all applicable billing regulations.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to clarify documentation and support accurate coding.
  • Serve as a resource for staff and patients regarding billing and coding questions.
  • Stay current on coding changes and industry trends.
  • Participate in staff training and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in healthcare administration is a plus.
  • Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) or equivalent certification.
  • Prior experience in medical billing and coding, preferably in a behavioral health setting.
  • Familiarity with ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations.
  • Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems and billing software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to explain billing processes clearly.
  • Excellent accuracy in coding and financial reconciliation.
