The Hospital Outpatient Coder Level II assigns ICD-9/ICD-10 and CPT codes for ambulatory surgery, gastrointestinal, infusion, and observation encounters with a focus on accuracy and compliance. The role works closely with physicians, clinical documentation improvement specialists, quality teams, and patient finance staff.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assigning diagnosis and procedure codes using official coding guidelines and AHA Coding Clinic references
- Supporting billing, research, internal and external reporting, and regulatory compliance
- Following up on CCI edits, claim rejections, and other billing-related issues
- Ensuring accuracy of APCs and extracting core data into the HIM abstracting system and data warehouse repository
Requirements & Qualifications
Required qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two years of acute care outpatient coding experience, including outpatient diagnostic and ED coding
- CIRCC preferred, or one of the following certifications: CPC, CPC-H, CCA, RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P
