Outpatient/Provider Coder II

This role is responsible for abstracting, coding, and interpreting outpatient clinic and provider services for professional or facility billing. The position uses coding knowledge to abstract and record data from medical records and provides support for documentation and coding-related needs. This is a non-clinical role and does not involve direct patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Reconcile clinic or provider visits and report missing, incomplete, or inconsistent documentation by contacting the appropriate personnel.
  • Review, abstract, and code multiple/specialty services and assign appropriate coding classifications.
  • Provide feedback to providers, hospital staff, and clinic managers on billing-related issues.
  • Research and resolve high-volume accounts and complex suspended claims.
  • Interpret and apply basic regulatory guidelines to coding and reimbursement decisions.
  • Maintain department quality and productivity standards.
  • Assist with other department coding needs as requested.
  • Mentor and help train Level I Coders.
Requirements & Qualifications

Required

  • AHIMA or AAPC-recognized certification such as CCA, CPC, COC, CPC-H, CPC-P, CCS, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT, or another specialty certification approved by the department; or 3 years of coding experience.
  • 2 years of coding, clinical, or billing experience.
  • If qualifying through equivalency without certification, must obtain an AHIMA or AAPC-recognized certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the role.
  • Strong human relations and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of clinical documentation requirements, regulatory and reimbursement rules, and health insurance processing.
  • Proficiency with computer software such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to maintain certifications through continuing education.
  • Ability to train others.

Preferred

  • Experience organizing and conducting coding or billing education.
