The Cardiology Coder reviews clinical documentation to assign and sequence diagnostic and procedural codes for patient records used in billing, reimbursement, and hospital data retrieval. The role may also validate APC calculations, ensure accurate capture of diagnoses and procedures, and support documentation review and abstraction for regulatory and compliance purposes.
Responsibilities include working with facility and/or physician records, supporting compliant coding practices, and communicating with client staff and providers as needed.
Required
- Active AHIMA credential such as RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCA, or active AAPC credential such as COC, CCS-P, or CPC, or a related specialty credential
- 2 years of recent and relevant hands-on coding experience
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, ICD-10, and CPT/HCPCS code sets
- Ability to maintain 95% coding quality accuracy while meeting production and quality standards
- Proficient computer skills, including MS Office and the ability to enter data, sort, and filter Excel files
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Must pass a pre-employment skills assessment
Preferred
- Recent experience in an active production coding environment
- Associate degree in HIM or a healthcare-related field, or equivalent education and experience
- Experience with EPIC and Optum CAC
- Facility and professional fee experience
