The Coding Specialist I is responsible for applying the appropriate ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT diagnostic and procedural codes for outpatient and/or inpatient encounters, including ancillary encounters and ambulatory/provider-based clinics.

Key duties include:

  • Navigating the patient health record and other computer systems to determine diagnosis and procedure codes, MS-DRGs, APCs, CPT/HCPCS assignment, and required modifiers
  • Validating charges against health record documentation when needed
  • Communicating with clinical staff, physicians, office staff, and Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists regarding documentation issues
  • Tracking missing documentation, charge issues, and physician queries to support timely coding
  • Meeting coding quality and productivity standards
  • Maintaining confidentiality and compliance with privacy, security, reimbursement, and regulatory requirements
  • Keeping current on coding and reimbursement guidelines and regulations
  • Performing other duties as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications

Education and experience

  • High school diploma and 2 years of experience, or
  • Associate's degree in Coding or a similar field with no experience required

Knowledge and skills

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and diagnostic/procedural coding
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS, MS-DRG, APR-DRG, and APC coding principles and guidelines
  • Understanding of third-party reimbursement regulations and billing practices
  • Experience with encoding/grouping software
  • Basic proficiency with desktop and Windows-based computer systems, email, internet, and computer navigation
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians and management
  • Ability to adapt to change and handle challenges proactively
  • Experience assisting with learning needs and training coding staff is preferred

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
  • Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC)
  • Certified Professional Coder - Payer (CPC-P)
  • Certified Risk Adjustment Coder (CRC)
  • Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
