The Coding Specialist I is responsible for applying the appropriate ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT diagnostic and procedural codes for outpatient and/or inpatient encounters, including ancillary encounters and ambulatory/provider-based clinics.
Key duties include:
- Navigating the patient health record and other computer systems to determine diagnosis and procedure codes, MS-DRGs, APCs, CPT/HCPCS assignment, and required modifiers
- Validating charges against health record documentation when needed
- Communicating with clinical staff, physicians, office staff, and Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists regarding documentation issues
- Tracking missing documentation, charge issues, and physician queries to support timely coding
- Meeting coding quality and productivity standards
- Maintaining confidentiality and compliance with privacy, security, reimbursement, and regulatory requirements
- Keeping current on coding and reimbursement guidelines and regulations
- Performing other duties as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications
Education and experience
- High school diploma and 2 years of experience, or
- Associate's degree in Coding or a similar field with no experience required
Knowledge and skills
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and diagnostic/procedural coding
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT/HCPCS, MS-DRG, APR-DRG, and APC coding principles and guidelines
- Understanding of third-party reimbursement regulations and billing practices
- Experience with encoding/grouping software
- Basic proficiency with desktop and Windows-based computer systems, email, internet, and computer navigation
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with physicians and management
- Ability to adapt to change and handle challenges proactively
- Experience assisting with learning needs and training coding staff is preferred

- Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
