Senior Inpatient Medical Coder

Optum

Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group, is seeking a Senior Inpatient Medical Coder to provide coding services directly to providers in a virtual, remote role. The position focuses on accurate inpatient facility coding, documentation review, and supporting high standards for coding quality and compliance.

This role includes a 4-week virtual training period conducted from home. Candidates may telecommute from anywhere within the U.S. and should be highly organized, self-directed, and comfortable working in a remote environment.

Requirements & Qualifications

Primary responsibilities

  • Assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient hospital services
  • Understand how coding impacts DRG assignment, including CC/MCC relevance
  • Abstract additional data elements during chart review as needed
  • Follow ethical coding standards established by AAPC and/or AHIMA
  • Maintain required quality and productivity standards
  • Provide documentation feedback and query physicians when appropriate
  • Keep coding knowledge current through ongoing education and review
  • Participate in coding department meetings and educational events
  • Track charts coded, held, and/or missing

Required qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, or higher
  • Professional coder certification from AHIMA and/or AAPC: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-H
  • 3+ years of acute care inpatient medical coding experience
  • 2+ years of experience in a Level 2 or higher trauma center and/or teaching hospital
  • Experience with complex procedures, trauma ER encounters, cardiac catheterization, interventional radiology, orthopedic cases, neurology cases, and observation coding
  • 2+ years of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and DRG coding experience
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screening, including drug screening and background check

Preferred qualifications

  • 2+ years of outpatient facility coding experience
  • Experience in a Level 1 trauma center
  • Experience with OSHPD reporting
  • Experience with encoder systems such as eCAC, 3M, and EPIC
  • Proficiency with Windows, Microsoft Excel, and EMR systems
  • Ability to work a 40-hour schedule with occasional overtime and one weekend day as needed
