Billing/Collections Specialist

UPMC Community Pharmacy is hiring a full-time, hybrid Billing/Collections Specialist to support timely billing, collections, resolution, and analysis of third-party payer accounts for retail pharmacy services.

This role acts as a liaison between pharmacies, insurance companies, patients and their representatives, and internal stakeholders to help ensure accurate reimbursement and efficient account resolution.

The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with no weekend or holiday requirements. The position is based out of UPMC Community Pharmacy at 1860 Centre Avenue in Pittsburgh, PA, with approximately 50% to 90% remote work depending on business and departmental needs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Building and maintaining positive working relationships with pharmacy and receivable team personnel
  • Communicating insurance and financial information related to patient accounts
  • Analyzing billing and collection processes to identify inefficiencies and recommend improvements
  • Negotiating discounts and settlements within established guidelines
  • Resolving accounts by coordinating with insurers, pharmacy staff, patients, and representatives
  • Maintaining logs and reporting on collection issues, high-dollar accounts, and reimbursement concerns
  • Pursuing pharmacy account collections from adjudication through final resolution
Requirements & Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A bachelor's degree, or
  • 3-5 years of experience as a retail pharmacy technician, or
  • 3-5 years of experience in a pharmacy accounts receivable environment
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and collection skills
  • Knowledge of third-party payors such as Medicare, Blue Cross, Medical Assistance, and commercial plans
  • Familiarity with reimbursement practices and automated patient billing systems
  • Successful third-party collection experience and solid decision-making skills, preferably in long-term care or retail pharmacy
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, payors, government offices, and others through in-person, phone, and written communication
  • Ability to work independently in a decisive and timely manner
  • Act 34 clearance
