The ophthalmic scribe is responsible for proper documentation, caring patient interaction, and the overall success of clinic flow. This role supports the coordination of practice activities that contribute to the successful performance of the clinic.
Responsibilities include:
- Verifying patient information, recording medical history, and confirming the purpose of visit
- Performing patient workups based on chief complaint and patient history
- Completing EMR clinical chart documentation accurately
- Safeguarding medical records and maintaining patient confidentiality
- Completing diagnostic and procedure coding as needed
- Communicating physician orders, drop instructions, medication guidance, and surgery-related questions to patients
- Assisting with in-office procedures such as laser surgeries and ocular injections
- Preparing patients for ophthalmology examinations, including dilation, visual acuity recording, tonometry, and blood pressure checks
- Conducting visual field testing, fluorescein angiography, and OCT testing
- Maintaining equipment, supplies, and exam/procedure rooms
- Following HIPAA, OSHA, and compliance regulations
- Working flexible hours, including early mornings and late evenings, and traveling as required
Requirements & Qualifications
Job qualifications
- High school diploma or bachelor's degree
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Medical Scribe (COS), or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) strongly preferred
- Previous experience in a medical group practice environment preferred
- Experience in clinical ophthalmology preferred
- Understanding of medical terminology required
- Must have flexible hours, including early mornings and late evenings
- Travel required
Certifications and training
- COA certification encouraged; COS or COT preferred
- Must obtain at least COA certification within 12 months of hire date if not already certified
- Certified Patient Service Specialist (CPSS) required within 6 months of hire date
- Online OSHA and HIPAA training required every 12 months from hire date
