HIM Coding Manager

Shepherd Center is a world-class rehabilitation hospital in Atlanta providing clinical care, research, and family support for people with complex conditions such as spinal cord and brain injuries, multi-trauma, traumatic amputations, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and pain.

The HIM Coding Manager provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for coding services within the Health Information Management department. This role is responsible for coding accuracy, compliance, timeliness, productivity, backlog management, reporting, and workflow optimization. The position partners with Revenue Cycle, Compliance, Quality, Clinical, and Information Technology teams to improve performance and maintain data integrity.

Key responsibilities include managing inpatient and outpatient/professional fee coding operations, building productivity and quality monitoring processes, overseeing audits and corrective action plans, reducing backlog, supporting revenue cycle performance, optimizing Epic workflows and reporting, implementing AI-assisted coding tools, educating staff and providers, and representing HIM in interdisciplinary initiatives.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • Two- or four-year degree from an accredited Health Information Technology or Health Information Management program, or an accredited healthcare-related program

Certification

  • AHIMA or AAPC credential required: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CPC

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in hospital-based coding operations
  • Minimum 3 years of leadership or management experience
  • Experience managing coding operations in an Epic environment required

Skills and competencies

  • Advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, and DRG/APC reimbursement methodologies
  • Advanced Epic proficiency, including coding workflows, reporting tools, and work queue management
  • Ability to develop and implement productivity and quality management systems
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into actionable insights
  • Experience with coding audits, compliance programs, and regulatory requirements
  • Strong leadership, communication, team development, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic healthcare environment
