Senior Patient Financial Specialist

The Senior Patient Financial Specialist supports the Revenue Cycle division of CHRISTUS Health by resolving patient accounts and reconciling outstanding balances in a timely and efficient manner. This role works collaboratively with internal and external customers, serves as a subject matter expert for the Patient Financial Services department, and supports process improvements and operational efficiency.

The position involves payer follow-up, claims and denial resolution, account analysis, reimbursement research, and work queue management. It also requires strong knowledge of patient accounting systems, billing processes, government and commercial payer rules, and revenue cycle workflows.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Post-secondary education preferred

Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience preferred
  • Experience calculating expected reimbursement according to payer regulations and/or contracts required
  • Experience with commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid reimbursement
  • Medicare, Medicaid, VA, and Tricare billing and collections experience preferred
  • College education, insurance company claims experience, or healthcare billing trade school education may be considered in lieu of formal hospital experience
  • Hands-on experience with Medicare Remote (FISS) - DDE preferred

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong working knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 coding regulations and guidelines
  • Ability to verify coverage, submit claims, and follow up on appeals, underpayments, short pays, and payment disputes
  • Experience resolving complex denials, underpayments, and credit balances
  • Strong understanding of patient accounting systems, document imaging, and databases
  • Knowledge of Medicare and commercial contract language
  • Familiarity with billing, customer service, and cash applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
