Medical Records Technician (Coder)

US Military Treatment Facilities under DHA

About the position:

This position is located at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX. It is a Direct Hire Solicitation for the public/U.S. citizens.

Key duties include:

  • Assigning specific codes to medical records and sequencing codes to accurately reflect resources and procedures used in patient care.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements using ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding systems.
  • Correlating operation codes with diagnosis codes to select the most descriptive code when multiple anatomical locations are involved.
  • Performing quantitative analysis and checking medical records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Reviewing documentation for accuracy, internal consistency, and correlation of recorded data, and returning records to providers or departments for correction or completion.
  • Identifying and documenting incidents that may indicate a potential compensatory event or a questionable breach of quality of care.

  • Personnel Security Investigation required.
  • May require consent to seasonal influenza vaccination or approved exemption.
  • Immunization screening required; Hepatitis B immunization required for positions with direct patient contact.
  • May require work during irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and varying schedules.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • May require a 1-year probationary period.
  • Direct deposit required.

  • Resume must clearly demonstrate specialized experience.
  • If qualifying based on education, transcript must be submitted.

Qualifications

Specialized experience must include one year of experience involving:

  • Translating diagnostic and procedural phrases from medical records into coded form using ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT, HCPCS Level II, or similar coding systems.
  • Reviewing medical records for accurate coding.
  • Correcting inconsistencies or discrepancies in medical documentation.

Alternative qualification paths include:

  • 9 semester hours of graduate-level education in Health Informatics, Healthcare Administration, Health Information Management, or a related field.
  • A combination of education and experience totaling 100% of the requirement.
