Patient Access Specialist at Northwestern Medicine supporting patient registration, scheduling, insurance verification, and financial clearance functions in a hospital setting. This role works the night shift from 10:00pm to 6:30am and is part of a patient-first team focused on delivering excellent service, maintaining data integrity, and helping patients navigate care efficiently.
Key duties include:
- Greeting and assisting patients while providing a positive first impression
- Collecting and verifying demographic and registration information
- Scheduling and directing patients through hospital systems
- Performing medical necessity checks for scheduled services
- Verifying insurance eligibility, benefit levels, and real-time eligibility
- Collecting authorization numbers and assisting with insurance/referral questions
- Completing out-of-pocket estimates and informing patients of financial concerns
- Using Epic and other online tools to document, verify, and coordinate patient information
- Participating in quality assurance and process improvement activities
- Supporting cross-training and helping train new staff
- Maintaining compliance with HIPAA, departmental policies, and regulatory standards
Requirements & Qualifications
Required qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 2-3 years of customer service or medical office experience
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Proficiency in computer data entry and typing
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to type 40 words per minute
- Ability to multi-task
- Strong customer service orientation
- Excellent organizational, time management, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Preferred qualifications:
- Additional education
- Additional language skills
- Healthcare finance and/or healthcare insurance experience
- Experience in a healthcare setting, especially patient scheduling and/or registration
