Laboratory Animal Research Assistant or Specialist

University of Maryland, Baltimore is seeking a Laboratory Animal Research Assistant or Specialist for the School of Medicine, Department of Radiation Oncology.

The role supports animal research activities and animal clinical care in a laboratory setting with a variety of species. Work is performed in accordance with animal welfare regulations and applicable standards, including USDA, PHS, OLAW, AAALAC, and IACUC guidelines.

Duties vary based on the selected level:

  • Perform routine or independent laboratory animal research activities, including daily animal health observations, specimen collection, diagnostic testing, and reporting outcomes.
  • Conduct or assist with procedures such as ELISA, bacteriological and biological assays, PCR, DNA extraction, electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, and other biochemical or hematopoietic procedures.
  • Support animal care activities such as surgery, anesthesia, enrichment, post-operative care, treatment administration, and euthanasia when required.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using computer software.
  • Assist with research study design, manuscript preparation, scientific illustrations, grant materials, and presentations.
  • Help maintain laboratory operations, equipment, supplies, policies, safety compliance, and quality control.
  • Train and guide students, fellows, and junior technical staff.

The position is primarily on-site in Maryland.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, agriculture, veterinary science, biochemistry, chemistry, or a related animal science field.
  • For the Specialist level, three years of experience in a research laboratory setting or animal hospital is preferred, including relevant specialization experience.
  • Certifications such as CVT, RVT, RLATg, or LAT are preferred depending on level.
  • Knowledge of applicable regulations, laws, and research protocols.
  • Ability to use relevant technology and software.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
