HIM Specialist I

Position Summary

Full-time HIM Specialist I role supporting day-to-day Health Information Management operations across multiple hospitals and functional areas, including data integrity, document imaging, birth registry, deficiencies, and release of information.

The position is fully onsite at Bayfront Hospital and works Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with weekends and holidays as needed.

Key responsibilities include processing and routing documents and images, indexing and scanning records, performing basic patient and encounter validation, updating demographic and chart information, and handling straightforward requests while protecting PHI and maintaining compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, and organizational policies.

Core responsibilities

  • Maintain data integrity in the Master Patient Index and help identify duplicate or overlay records.
  • Prep, scan/import, and index patient documents with quality checks.
  • Support birth registry functions, including data entry and form completion.
  • Perform medical record analysis and manage deficiency workflows.
  • Process release of information requests, correspondence, logging, tracking, and record fulfillment.
  • Provide customer service to physicians, patients, and other requestors.
  • Maintain productivity, quality, confidentiality, and compliance standards.
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

Education and skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to type at least 30 words per minute.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Windows.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Medical Terminology preferred, or required within 1 year of hire.

Experience

  • 1 year of experience in Health Information Management, Revenue Management, Revenue Cycle, or a healthcare field preferred.
  • Completion of a degree program in Health Information Management, Healthcare Informatics, Health Information Technology, or Health Service Administration may substitute for 1 year of experience.
