Medical Examiner Assistant

DEPT OF HEALTH/MENTAL HYGIENE

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) investigates deaths in New York City involving criminal violence, accidents, suicides, unattended deaths, deaths in custody, and other suspicious or unusual circumstances.

This role supports autopsy operations, mortuary coordination, decedent recovery and transport, case check-in/check-out, and related administrative and operational activities. The position also assists with training support, specialized examinations, documentation, equipment oversight, and coordination with multiple city agencies and third-party partners.

Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent approved by a state education department or recognized accrediting organization.
  • 1 year of full-time satisfactory experience in mortuary and/or autopsy work.

For Assignment Level II

  • 2 total years of qualifying mortuary and/or autopsy experience.

For Assignment Level III

  • 4 total years of qualifying mortuary and/or autopsy experience.
  • 2 years must be in a supervisory capacity.

License requirements

  • Valid New York State motor vehicle driver license required and must be maintained.
  • Any required licenses, certifications, or endorsements must be obtained within 3 months of appointment unless otherwise specified.

Preferred skills

  • Death scene investigations experience
  • Postmortem care experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and spreadsheet applications
  • Ability to support staff with CMS-related issues
  • Strong organization, oral communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Supervisory experience across multiple disciplines

Other notes

  • Selected candidates must provide a DNA sample by swab.
  • This is an essential position and may require 24-hour availability during emergencies.
  • New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
