Medical Coder II

Marion Health

Codes medical observation, outpatient, emergency room, and/or ambulatory surgery discharge records for reimbursement, research, and compliance with federal regulations. Assigns diagnoses and invasive and non-invasive procedures using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 classification systems. Abstracts information needed for statistical data and anesthesia improvement. Provides education to providers regarding correct coding initiatives. Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment with prolonged sitting

  • Repetitive wrist, finger, and hand movement

Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One of the following credentials:
    • Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
    • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
    • Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P)
    • Certified Obstetrics/Gynecology Coder (COBGC)
    • Certified Procedural Coder (CPC)
    • Certified Procedural Coder Apprentice (CPC-A)
  • College-level Applied Science courses in Anatomy/Physiology and Medical Terminology as required by certifying body
  • Two years of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding experience, or related coding courses acceptable to Health Information Management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of billing experience

  • Thorough understanding of the medical record to locate information supporting coding specificity
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well under stress
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to problem solve, multi-task in a fast-paced setting, and work well in a team environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, telephone systems, and related computer applications
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
