The Medical Records Director (Non-Nurse) maintains patients’ clinical records, including coding and auditing, and provides staff education regarding recordkeeping procedures in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and Life Care standards. This role also serves as the designated Privacy Officer for the facility and reports to the Executive Director.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education and credentials
- Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- RHIA or RHIT credential, or a degree in a health-related field with extensive training and demonstrated competence in HIM
- Training in post-acute care health information management
Knowledge and skills
- Knowledge of state and federal legal requirements related to documentation, confidentiality, and health information law
- Ability to use complex computer software systems efficiently
- Functional knowledge in the field of practice
- Ability to make independent decisions when appropriate
- Knowledge of medical records practices and procedures, including laws, regulations, and guidelines governing medical records functions in a post-acute care facility
- Ability to implement and interpret department programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
- Proficiency in medical coding, auditing, clinical records, privacy officer responsibilities, supervisory responsibilities, patient rights, and safety and sanitation
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of proprietary and confidential information
- Ability to follow company policies, compliance procedures, and Code of Conduct
- Strong communication, judgment, and teamwork skills
