The CPT® Code 0833T refers to the process of digitizing glass microscope slides specifically for cytopathology, which includes smears and other sources. This procedure involves converting physical glass slides into a digital format, allowing for the images to be stored either on a local computer server or within a cloud-based archive. The digitization process facilitates further examination of the slides, enabling remote pathologists to analyze the images or utilize computer algorithms to assist in providing a pathologic diagnosis. This method of digitization is particularly beneficial as it enhances the ability to manage and interpret cytopathology information within an increasingly image-based environment. The slides, which are prepared from various samples such as sputum specimens, are scanned into a digital slide imaging system. This system is essential for acquiring a pathological diagnosis, which is then interpreted and reported. It is important to note that this code is reported separately in addition to the code for the primary procedure. For instance, if slide digitization occurs simultaneously with screening and interpretation, the appropriate code to report is 0832T. Conversely, if the sample requires preparation before screening and interpretation, the code 0833T should be used. Additionally, when slide digitization is performed concurrently with slide preparation for an extended study involving five or more slides and/or multiple stains, the code 0834T is applicable.
