Common Language Description

A body cast is a type of orthopedic cast that is applied to immobilize the body from the shoulder to the hips, and it may also include one thigh. This procedure is typically performed to treat various conditions that require stabilization of the torso and potentially the thigh area. The application process begins with the placement of a stockinette over the area that will be casted, which serves as a protective layer for the skin. Following this, padding is added to provide cushioning and comfort. The casting material, which can be either plaster or fiberglass, is then prepared by immersing it in water until it is fully saturated. After excess water is removed, the casting material is carefully wrapped around the torso, extending over the neck and head, and/or one thigh as necessary. During the application, the material is smoothed and molded to ensure a proper fit and to provide the necessary support for the healing process. It is important to note that there are specific codes for different types of casts: CPT® Code 29035 is used for a shoulder to hip cast, CPT® Code 29040 is designated for a Minerva type cast that includes the torso and head, CPT® Code 29044 is specifically for a body cast that includes one thigh, and CPT® Code 29046 is for a body cast that includes both thighs.
