The lateral retinaculum is a fibrous band that helps stabilize the patella, and when it is too tight, it can pull the patella out of its normal alignment, leading to pain and functional impairment. The procedure begins with a thorough arthroscopic examination of the knee joint to assess the condition of the cartilage, ligaments, and other structures within the knee. This examination is crucial as it allows the surgeon to visualize the extent of the misalignment and any other potential issues that may need to be addressed during the surgery. Following the examination, the surgeon makes small incisions, known as portal incisions, on the anterolateral and anteromedial sides of the knee to access the joint.
